We have decided to move from the city to the country. This is a journey of changes for our whole family. We are leaving the hectic & loud traffic behind and heading to the peacefulness of an old gravel road.Aimeehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13512238160487484991noreply@blogger.comBlogger17125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1098140859572832910.post-77265180592271839292013-06-29T10:11:00.001-07:002013-06-29T10:11:49.508-07:00Garden update

I found some 100% pomegranate juice at Aldi recently for 1.49 per 8oz.

I have always wanted to try this and was really hoping that my kids would like it since it is so healthy. We all tried a little and all of us decided it wasn't anything we would look forward to drinking. Darn it. The next day I was making some ice cream and had the idea of turning some of the juice into syrup and trying it on our ice cream. Well I wasn't real thrilled with it but the kids really liked it, Success!! So I took the rest of the juice and turned it into 4 pints of pomegranate syrup.
This is a picture from last Thursday, May 2nd!!!
This was during a small break in the snow and wind. I got over to the shed and got the sleds
back out for the kids. Between Thursday and Friday we received 11 inches of snow!
School was cancelled on Thursday, which I told the kids I don't ever remember school being cancelled because of snow in May!

I had planted 2 blueberries, 3 grapes, and a currant the week before this when temperatures were in the 70's. It looks like they are all ok though, thank goodness. It has warmed up again this week with temps 50-60's during the day and 40's at night. Until tonight we have a frost warning and it is supposed to dip to 30'. But after tonight the forecast does not have any temps below freezing. So I am anxiously awaiting getting in the garden and planting, finally!!! It has been really hard to wait so long but I guess I made the right decision. I had a small chicken carcass from our meals this week so I put it in a small stockpot along with 3 carrots and 2 stalks of celery that were in the fridge, covered with water, and simmered it most of yesterday. Last night I strained into a bowl and put it in the fridge. This morning I skimmed off the fat and jarred it up and pressure canned it. It smells & tastes so great!
Canning for 2013 has began!

I had some leftover beef roast that we had been eating on for two days and we were tired of it. So I needed to do something with it. So I cut it into bite sized chunks and added it to jars, then I cut up some potatoes and carrots and threw them in the jars too. Then I added beef broth and canned them up. I used pint and a half jars because that will be a good size for us.
We finally got moved and spent our first night here on January 6th. But we had so much unpacking and organizing to do, but I think I am about 90% done now. The internet provider that we planned on using came to hook us up and figured out that their signal does not reach us even though they were sure it would. And even though I had the phone transferred a week ahead of time it was still now working. So we felt pretty cut off from everyone. Which was ok since it enabled me to get at unpacking and organizing with only the kids to distract me. And thankfully there were no emergencies for us or anyone else that needed to contact us. We finally have internet so I will be able to provide regular updates on our journey in the country.Aimeehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13512238160487484991noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1098140859572832910.post-59652626541265954302012-12-23T18:00:00.000-08:002012-12-23T18:00:13.757-08:002 loads movedWell I was able to get two trailer loads moved today. The trailer is only 4 x 8 so it doesn't hold as much as I would like at a time. But it was nice to get some stuff moved today. Some snow is forecasted for tonight and I have to work tomorrow, so I don't know if anything will get moved tomorrow but it will get done eventually I am sure!Aimeehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13512238160487484991noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1098140859572832910.post-78476045386296386802012-12-21T13:53:00.001-08:002012-12-21T13:53:39.973-08:00Delayed Moving TimeWe were planning on moving today. Then yesterday we got our first blizzard of the season. The drifts are so tall there is no way to get through them with a truck and trailer. It would be nice to just delay for one day but the roads are still not looking the best. Hopefully the county road crews are able to get the roads cleared and we can get both driveways cleared and at least get somethings moved this weekend and then can finish up on Christmas Eve!
Wish us luck!Aimeehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13512238160487484991noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1098140859572832910.post-83208610196570586542012-12-08T18:36:00.000-08:002012-12-08T18:36:08.137-08:00Play set for the Kids!I saw a post on Craigslist of someone giving away a wooden playground. It was a big one, ten years old, and would be a heck of a lot of work to take apart! I thought about it for a short while but I knew this was probably the only way I would ever be able to get something like this for my kids. So after two trips with the big trailer and three constant days of work, my kids have a playground to call there own.
On the main floor of the house has the original wood flooring in the LR, DR, hall, and 2 BR's.
They were in bad shape but I really wanted to use them so I rented a floor sander and got to work on them. Then I had to hand sand all the edges. There was several pieces that had cracked and a few gouges here and there, but I think that adds charcter so I didn't try to fix that. Now I will clean them up and get ready for the stain and finish.Aimeehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13512238160487484991noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1098140859572832910.post-55393595701442252522012-10-13T08:37:00.000-07:002012-10-13T08:37:41.916-07:00Youngest daughter's room

Part of the open attic has been transitioned into my youngest daughters bedroom.

I didn't take a picture before we started, but it was just an open attic with no floor or any thing.

Here it is with a skylight installed, drywall hung, and subfloor installed.

And here it is with the drywall finished and painted.

All that's left is to hang the new light, and install carpet!

And she loves her new room, she tells me everytime we go out there!!

As soon as I closed on the propery I went to work getting a garden started. And I jumped in with both feet, my garden this year is about 20'x60'. Although it has been tough to keep up with it while working on the house to get it ready for us to move into, and trying to keep up with the current house and my three kids, I am still very glad to have this garden. And as you can tell I put together the fence by only buying 5 posts and using everything else that I salvaged from other areas of the property. Not pretty but it works great.

This year I planted 7 rows of sweet corn, 2 bushel gourds, 2 lumina pumpkins, 1 chili pepper, 3 red carribbean peppers, 2 hillbilly orange tomatoes, 2 beefsteak tomatoes, 1 striped roman tomato, 12 la roma tomatoes, 2 sugar baby watermelons, 12 russet potatoes, 1 row lincoln peas, 6 broccoli, and 2 huckleberries.

We have harvested quite a bit from the garden already and have some plants still going strong. I am already planning on an expansion for next year!!Aimeehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13512238160487484991noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1098140859572832910.post-62009071494404228702012-08-25T17:58:00.001-07:002012-08-25T17:58:49.563-07:00I recently purchased six acres of land with a small house, tiny barn, and a little stream. We have a lot of work ahead of us to make this into our happy little homestead but we are very eager to dig in and get started.

We hope you will follow along with us on our new journey!Aimeehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13512238160487484991noreply@blogger.com0
